چکیده

In this paper we present a cable mechanism that realizes a nonlinear rotational spring from a linear translational spring. The spring is pulled by a cable wound around a non-circular spool, which is rigidly attached to the joint. The non-circular shape of the spool induces a nonlinear relationship between its angular position and the torque created by the tension of the cable. Depending on the shape of the spool, various torque– angle relationships can be realized. We show that for a given nonlinear torque–angle relationship, there is an explicit expression (closed-form solution) of the shape of the spool that synthesizes this function. First, we present the geometry of the problem. Then, we derive the methodology to calculate the shape of the spool to synthesize a prescribed torque–angle relationship. Finally, we verify the design methodology by experiments with three different spools realizing a constant force spring, an exponential softening spring and a cubic polynomial spring. We discuss the possible sources of errors between the theoretical and experimental results. © Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden and The Robotics Society of Japan, 2012

Synthesis of Nonlinear Stiffness Profile with a Varying Radius Cable Spool

In this paper, we present a cable mechanism which synthesizes a nonlinear rotational spring from a linear spring. The nonlinearity is realized by winding the cable around a spool which has a varying radius. We show that for a given nonlinear torque profile (synthesis objective) there is an explicit geometric expression of the shape of the spool which synthesizes this profile. We present the geo...

Thermoelastic Analysis of Compressor Spool in Turbojet Engine and Redesign it Using Functionally Graded Materials with Opti-mal Coefficients

In this article, an exact analysis of compressors spool in a turbojet engine has been investigated. The spool is modeled as a rotating thick-walled hollow circular cylinder with free-clamp ends. It is subjected to centrifugal load due to its constant rotational speed, uniform internal and external radial loads and arbitrary thermal gradients. The analysis is initially investigated for the homog...

Development of Water Hydraulic Proportional Valves Driven by Positive Cam Mechanism

This paper describes development of water hydraulic proportional valves. The valves are spool-type and the spool is driven by a stepping motor and positive cam mechanism. The cam is always placed between two cam followers and the return spring is omitted. The rotational angle of the cam and the displacement of the spool is linear. The experimental results of static characteristics are also show...

Optimal Design of Nonlinear Series Elastic Actuator for Minimization of Actuator Power

In this paper, we propose a methodology to optimize the nonlinear stiffness of nonlinear Series Elastic Actuators (SEAs). The nonlinear restoring forces of the springs are optimized in order to minimize the mechanical power of the actuators of the SEAs. We define the cost function as the time average of the square of the actuator power, and use a 3 order Hermite interpolation to parameterize th...

A Macro-model for Nonlinear Analysis of 3D Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls

Architectural limitations in many situations make it necessary for the RC shear walls to be extended in plan in different directions at a single location that makes them a 3D configuration. Analysis of such walls is very challenging. In this research about 450 cases of 3D shear walls are considered with different shapes and heights. L, T and H-shape walls are studied. They are nonlinearly analy...
